RosterSafe vs Medallion

Medallion is the enterprise end of this category and it is a serious operation. This page is mostly about why the two products are not really substitutes, and the narrow case where they are.

Choose Medallion if

  • You want somebody else to do the credentialing. They are an NCQA-certified CVO; I am not a CVO at all.
  • You need to delegate credentialing to a certified party, or need committee-ready files.
  • You need cross-state licensing, privileging, or payer contract management.
  • Your procurement needs a SOC 2 report on file. I do not have one.
  • You are a health system, a payer, or a firm large enough that an enterprise engagement is proportionate.

Choose RosterSafe if

  • You do the credentialing yourself and what you actually need is for nothing to lapse.
  • You want to see the price, sign up, and import a roster today without a sales call.
  • You are tracking tens of providers rather than thousands, and enterprise pricing is out of proportion.
  • You want to set your own alert windows and keep being told after a deadline passes.

Side by side

Claims about Medallion come from its own site and from named public reviews. Where a row says "Not stated", it means I could not find a public answer and would rather show the gap than guess at one.

The three things that decide this one

1. Medallion does the work. RosterSafe watches the clock.

This is the whole comparison and everything else is detail. Medallion is a credentialing verification organization: it collects the documents, performs primary source verification, assembles committee-ready files, and stands behind an NCQA certification while doing it. It says it reaches file readiness in about a day and claims 99.9% file accuracy, and it runs a clearinghouse, CredAlliance, that verifies a provider once and reuses that across participating networks.

RosterSafe does none of that and never will. It is software. It holds every license, DEA registration, CAQH re-attestation date and payer enrollment across all your client practices, and it makes noise before any of them expire. If your problem is "I cannot keep up with the verification work", Medallion is a genuine answer and I am not. If your problem is "I do the work fine, but last quarter someone's license lapsed and I lost six weeks of billing", that is the one I built for. What six weeks actually comes to depends on that payer's share of your volume, which is what the cost-of-lapse calculator asks you for.

2. They do serve RCM firms. The question is size, not segment.

I am not going to claim Medallion ignores billing companies. Its own homepage lists RCM organizations as one of five segments it serves, alongside provider groups, health systems, payers and digital health companies. If you read a comparison page somewhere claiming otherwise, it is wrong.

The real difference is where each product's floor sits. Medallion talks in terms of 300+ healthcare organizations and publishes examples like Tampa General Hospital cutting credentialing from 30 days to 3. That is an enterprise engagement with an enterprise scope conversation attached to it. A firm tracking 20 providers across six client practices is not too small to be served well; it is too small for the engagement to be proportionate to the problem.

RosterSafe's floor is one provider, free, and its ceiling is a few hundred. $25 per active provider per month with a $100 floor is published on the pricing page, which means you can budget it and re-bill it to your clients at a known margin without asking anyone's permission.

3. Their own reviewers ask for the thing I am

The most useful signal I found is not a weakness so much as a shape. Across public reviews the recurring ask is for more control. Reviewers cite a lack of ability to customize profiles, reporting, credentialing files, data fields, and report that the CAQH pull doesn't pull all information over. One asks directly for a better self-service option for companies that want to manage their own enrollments and tasks.

That last one is a fair description of RosterSafe. Self-service is not a feature I added; it is the entire delivery model. You sign up, you import, you set your own alert windows, and nobody schedules a call with you.

Two honest caveats on that. These are individual reviews, not a pattern I have verified, and the public scores disagree with each other: Medallion holds 4.7 out of 5 from 9 reviews on Capterra but 3.8 out of 5 from 13 on G2. Thirty-odd reviews in total is a thin evidence base to draw conclusions from, and I would say the same about any page that leaned on it harder than this one does.

Where Medallion is ahead

On this comparison the list is long, and pretending otherwise would insult your intelligence.

  • NCQA Certified for Credentialing. If you need to delegate credentialing to a certified party, this is the row that decides it and nothing else on this page matters. RosterSafe is not certified and have no path to becoming certified, because I do not perform verification at all.
  • They will do the work. A full CVO with specialists reviewing exceptions. RosterSafe is software only and files nothing for you.
  • SOC 2. Medallion states it is SOC 2 compliant. I have completed no audit at all. If procurement needs a report, that ends it.
  • Scope I deliberately lack. Cross-state licensing, clinical privileging, payer contract management, delegated credentialing, and a national clearinghouse. Every one of those is a real capability and every one is something I have decided not to build.
  • Proof at scale. Medallion publishes "powering 300+ healthcare organizations" and names health-system customers. If a buying committee needs references at that scale, they have them.

For completeness rather than because I have proven I am better: Medallion reviewers also mention document redundancy where license screenshots populate unnecessarily, an initial rollout described as a bit clunky, and difficulty reaching phone support. Those are individual accounts from a small review base.

Questions about Medallion

Is RosterSafe an alternative to Medallion?
For most firms reading this, no. Medallion is a credentialing verification organization with NCQA certification, and it will do the work for you. RosterSafe is software that tracks deadlines and does not file anything on your behalf. Those are different purchases. The firms for whom this is a real choice are the ones who were considering Medallion mainly to stop things lapsing, and who intend to keep doing the credentialing work themselves.
Does Medallion serve billing companies and RCM firms?
Yes, and I want to be straight about that because it is the obvious thing for me to fudge. Medallion names RCM organizations as one of the five segments it serves, on its own homepage. So the question is not whether it will work with a firm like yours, it is whether you are the size it is priced and built for. Medallion talks about health systems, payers, and 300+ healthcare organizations, and one of its published examples is Tampa General Hospital. A firm tracking 20 providers is a long way below that.
How much does Medallion cost?
They do not publish it. Their pricing page says the investment model is built around your operational goals, scope, and performance commitments, which means a scoped quote after a conversation. There is no free version and no trial. I am not going to invent a figure for them. RosterSafe is $25 per active provider per month with a $100 monthly minimum, so 20 providers is $500 and you can work that out without talking to anyone.
What does Medallion do that RosterSafe will never do?
Verify credentials on your behalf, obtain and maintain state licenses, run clinical privileging, manage payer contracts, and stand behind an NCQA certification so you can delegate credentialing. None of those are on my roadmap. They are a different business with different liabilities, and saying no to them is what keeps RosterSafe cheap and simple enough to be worth its price.

Still doing the work yourself?

Then the deadline is the problem, not the verification. The free test drive takes one provider, forever, with no card.
